Why most price it wrong
The most common question we hear on onboarding calls is: "what price should I set?" (This is a question from a creator who already has an agent live — if you haven't published one yet, start with the 15-minute tutorial.)
And the pre-baked answer most arrive with is one of three:
- "I'll charge what so-and-so charges for something similar." Anchoring on a competitor without understanding their cost, product or audience.
- "I'll start cheap to gain traction." The shortest path to destroying margin and perception.
- "I set $9 because it's round and accessible." Emotional decision, not strategic.
None of these are wrong by principle. They're all wrong by default. Without a framework, getting it right is luck.
Price is the loudest signal a customer gets about your product. Underpricing isn't kindness — it's doubt about your own value.
4-step framework
We use this framework with creators billing from $1k to $30k/month on Member AI. Works on both ends.
Step 1: calculate the real token cost
Take your model (GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet, Gemini Pro, any) and estimate:
- Average tokens per conversation (input + output)
- Cost per thousand tokens (provider's table)
- Average conversations per active user per month
Example: GPT-4o-mini, copywriting agent, 800 tokens input + 400 tokens output per conversation, $0.00015 input + $0.0006 output per thousand tokens, 30 conversations per active user per month.
Cost per user = (1,200 / 1,000) × 0.000375 × 30 ≈ $0.013/month.
That's your absolute floor. Anything above is margin. (With BYOK that cost lands directly on your key, not Member AI — see why BYOK matters.)
Step 2: estimate the value delivered per conversation
This is where 95% of creators stop thinking.
Question: what does this conversation replace or generate for the customer?
- If the agent replaces a $10 consultation with you, value per conversation ≈ $10.
- If the agent generates $40 in pipeline for the B2B client, value ≈ $40.
- If the agent saves the customer 30 minutes and their time is worth $20/h, value ≈ $10.
Take the number and divide by 5 — that's your reasonable ceiling per conversation.
Step 3: pick the model (subscription vs usage)
For an individual creator, subscription almost always wins:
- Revenue predictability
- Recurring billing automated via Stripe Connect
- Customer gets it and accepts it ("AI Netflix")
- Allows testing monthly limits without charging overage
Charging by usage only makes sense in B2B with very high volumes (10k+ conversations/month) and customers who want to optimize.
Always 3 tiers. Always.
- Entry — low price, low limit, no advanced features. Zero friction to enter.
- Pro — what you want 70% to buy. 2.5x to 3x the entry. Should have the differentiating feature (persistent memory, custom integration, direct support).
- Scale — for those who need a lot. 3x to 5x the pro. Includes white-label, SLA, priority.
Basic pricing psychology: anchoring with Scale makes Pro look "reasonable".
Market price ranges in 2026
Looking at the 200+ active agents on Member AI, the ranges in play:
$9–19
Entry tier — monthly cap, B2C
$39–79
Pro tier — creator sweet spot
$119–399
Scale tier — B2B, white-label
Prices below $9 rarely sustain cost + perceived value. Prices above $399 only work in B2B with a contractual SLA.
The 3 most common mistakes
- Single price. Without anchoring, the customer compares against a random product and decides wrong. Always 3 tiers.
- Charm pricing ($39.90, $89.90). Works in mass e-commerce, doesn't work in premium SaaS. Use round.
- Raising prices without notice. If you're going to raise, give 60 days' heads-up, keep the legacy plan for the old cohort, and communicate what changed in the product.
The right price makes the customer think "worth it" and makes you think "I'm charging what I deserve." If either fails, recalibrate.
Launch your agent at the right price.
