byok-por-que-importa
BYOK — Bring Your Own Key — is the principle that the AI model behind your agent is contracted directly by you, with the provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google), using your API key. The platform just orchestrates. You pay for the token, see the token, control the token.
It looks like a technical detail. But it's the most political decision an AI platform makes. We chose BYOK from Member AI's first commit and we're not changing course.
What BYOK looks like in practice
When you connect an agent in Member AI, instead of us reselling tokens with a fat margin, we ask for your OpenAI API key (or Anthropic, or Google). Every time a member talks to your agent:
- Member AI builds the prompt and the context;
- Sends it straight to the AI provider, with your key;
- Receives the response, runs the tools (Stripe, CRM, etc.) and returns it to the conversation.
The token charge lands on your provider invoice. We only charge you the plan price — infrastructure, interface, integrations, support.
!
In practice: you open the OpenAI dashboard and see exactly how much each conversation cost. No inflated "credits", no hidden multiplier, no end-of-month surprise.
Because token resale is the most profitable business model in AI SaaS today. The platform buys 1M tokens at $0.15, repackages them as "credits" for $0.90, and the customer has no idea. 6x margin on top of a variable cost.
That creates three problems for the customer:
- Scaling gets expensive. Every extra conversation increases the SaaS bill, not the provider's. If your agent goes viral, the surprise is on you.
- You're locked in. You can't migrate platforms without losing usage history, unspent credits, and the lock-in to the proprietary model.
- You don't know what's running. Was it gpt-4o? gpt-4o-mini? a fine-tune? Some platforms swap the model behind your back to improve their margin.
The real economics of your token
To make it concrete, picture a hub with average volume: 1,000 conversations/month, each with ~8 turns, running on gpt-4o-mini.
$27.00
cost on a reseller platform
And that's a small hub. On a hub doing 10k conversations/month the gap becomes $240 a month no longer leaving your pocket. With BYOK, that money never left to begin with. Compare with other platforms in detail at /comparativos or see the Member AI pricing structure.
Control and portability
With your own key, you also gain three things we consider non-negotiable:
- Audit. Every request lives in the provider's logs. If someone questions a response, you have the source.
- Endpoint choice. You decide whether to use OpenAI's "no-train" endpoint (which guarantees data won't enter training), or Anthropic's Claude with retention opt-out. The platform doesn't choose for you.
- Portability. If you decide to leave Member AI tomorrow, take the key elsewhere without losing anything. We'd rather compete by winning than by holding you hostage.
If an AI platform doesn't let you see the real cost of the model behind it, it's selling you opacity as a feature. Member AI doesn't want to be that kind of platform.
How we do it at Member AI
During onboarding, you paste the key. We validate it, encrypt it at rest with AES-256, and use it only in your hub's inference context. We never log the key in plain text, never send it to analytics, never share it with third parties.
If you change or revoke the key, the agent stops working immediately and notifies you. You stay in control.

When using our key makes sense
BYOK is the default, but we offer a managed option for cases where it makes sense:
- You're testing the product in the first weeks and don't want to deal with a key yet;
- Very low volume (under 100 conversations/month) where the BYOK gain doesn't justify the setup;
- Enterprise wanting a single consolidated contract through Member AI.
In every case, the cost is explicit on the dashboard — no hidden markup. Once you cross a threshold, we'll proactively suggest migrating to BYOK.
Transparency isn't a marketing strategy. It's the only honest way to charge for software that runs on top of a variable cost the customer can't see on their own.
